For more pieces like this, <a data-analytics-id="inline-link" href="https://www.techradar.com/tag/power-on">check out the full series here</a>.</p></div></div><p>It's that time of year again — and the world's <a href="https://www.techradar.com/uk/best/best-tv-streaming-service-cord-cutting-compare">best streaming services</a> are up to their usual tricks.</p><p>Indeed, with fall (or spring, if you live south of the equator) upon us once more, the entertainment giants of the world are ready to demand more of your hard-earned money by jacking up the prices of their various streaming-platform plans.</p><p>So far, four of the world's leading streamers have passed increased costs onto consumers, with three doing so in the US — and they're only getting more brazen with when they announce these price hikes and how much they're now charging.</p><p>Just look at <a href="https://www.macrumors.com/2026/08/28/apple-tv-price-increase/" target="_blank">Apple TV raising its monthly and annual fees by $2 and $20</a> respectively in late August. Then there's the <a href="https://www.techradar.com/streaming/disney-plus/the-cost-of-disney-and-hulu-is-going-up-again-but-disney-argues-we-are-preserving-a-high-value-option-for-subscribers-as-it-freezes-the-price-on-three-of-its-streaming-bundles">2026 Disney+ and Hulu price rise</a>, which came into effect a whole month earlier (September 23) than in 2025 (October 21), and now asks new and returning users to pay an extra $0.50 to $3 per month for the plan they want to sign up for. And don't get me started on Netflix's recent UK price hike, which saw its <a href="https://deadline.com/2026/09/netflix-hikes-uk-prices-cheapest-plan-up-a-third-1237067976/" target="_blank">cheap, ads-based plan rise by an eye-watering 34%</a>...</p><figure class="van-image-figure inline-layout" data-bordeaux-image-check ><div class='image-full-width-wrapper'><div class='image-widthsetter' style="max-width:1000px;"><p class="vanilla-image-block" style="padding-top:56.20%;"><img id="iqGpB9k4sieAhx23dug8Mk" name="disney plus.jpg" alt="Disney Plus" src="https://cdn.mos.cms.futurecdn.net/iqGpB9k4sieAhx23dug8Mk-1920-80.jpg" mos="" align="middle" fullscreen="" width="1000" height="562" attribution="" endorsement="" class="inline"></p></div></div><figcaption itemprop="caption description" class=" inline-layout"><span class="caption-text">Disney+ and its sister streamer Hulu are more expensive than ever before in 2026 </span><span class="credit" itemprop="copyrightHolder">(Image credit: Shutterstock)</span></figcaption></figure><p>Admittedly, Disney has frozen the price on three of its streaming bundles, including its cheapest ad-supported <a href="https://www.techradar.com/streaming/disney-plus">Disney+</a> and <a href="https://www.techradar.com/streaming/hulu">Hulu</a> bundle. While that's worth applauding, especially for those on a budget, it's scant consolation for anyone subscribed to one of the House of Mouse's more expensive, ad-free, standalone plans or bundles. </p><p>Those higher fees will be an even more bitter pill to swallow amid Disney's claims that they're necessary to improve the user experience on their streaming platforms. Try telling that to Disney+'s worldwide user base, which was left fuming over reports — ones that have since been proved false — <a href="https://www.techradar.com/streaming/disney-plus/disney-confirms-it-hasnt-started-showing-ads-on-ad-free-disney-plans-after-report-incorrectly-said-it-had-but-that-hasnt-stopped-some-angry-fans-from-closing-their-accounts">that Disney+ would soon show ads on its ad-free plans</a>, and UK and European users after they<a href="https://www.techradar.com/televisions/disney-just-lost-4k-and-all-hdr-support-in-parts-of-europe-so-you-have-to-ask-what-the-point-of-a-premium-subscription-is-and-this-is-exactly-why-physical-media-is-on-the-rise"> temporarily lost 4K and HDR support on Disney+ in late July</a>.</p><p><a href="https://techradar.com/tag/netflix">Netflix</a>, Disney, and Apple are far from the only culprits, mind you. </p><p>Rival streamers including <a href="https://www.techradar.com/streaming/amazon-prime-video">Prime Video</a> and <a href="https://www.techradar.com/streaming/hbo-max">HBO Max</a> have also bumped up the price of their plans in recent years. At the time of this article's publication, there's no word on when they or other subscription video on demand (SVOD) platforms will announce their latest — and inevitable — annual price increases. Dive into any Reddit thread, or search for terms like 'Netflix price hike' on X/Twitter or the ResetEra forums, and you'll find numerous examples of people who have already voted with their bank cards and canceled their subscriptions.</p><p>Unfortunately, the number of users who have closed their accounts is a mere drop in the ocean for the globe's entertainment titans. With a reported 260 million subscribers worldwide, Netflix simply doesn't care if a handful of paying patrons walk away because it doesn't even dent their bottom line.</p><p>That said, the tide may be turning. Per <a href="https://finance.yahoo.com/markets/stocks/article/netflix-stock-is-getting-shredded--and-googles-youtube-may-be-the-reason-123041480.html" target="_blank">Yahoo Finance</a>, Netflix's stock has recently taken an almighty beating. The reason? A change in viewing habits that's seen people flock to YouTube and TikTok to watch more short-form video content. Add to the mix the constant cancellation of fan-favorite shows, less unmissable content worth streaming, and certain features being locked behind expensive tiers, and why would people pay for Netflix, Disney+, and company when they can get visual content for free elsewhere?</p><p>Is that enough to make the world's leading streamers sit up and take notice? Probably not. In my view, the only way Netflix, <a href="https://www.techradar.com/streaming/paramount-plus">Paramount+</a>, Peacock, or any other SVOD service will listen is if tens of millions of users suddenly and collectively ended their subscriptions — and, frankly, that's almost never going to happen. </p><p>However, if people really want a sea change in the industry from a subscription cost standpoint, a major user revolution is required.
